ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN PERSPECTIVES

Event program in the art space hase29
February – April 2024

Against the background of the resurgent anti-Semitism in Germany, the increasing threat to Jewish but also Muslim people and in view of the polarization between people who lean towards either the Israeli or the Palestinian "side", the art space hase29 continues with the extensive event program "Israeli-Palestinian Perspectives “a sign of solidarity and solidarity with the victims of the terrorist act carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, as well as with the victims of the resulting acts of war in Israel and Gaza.

The event program creates a space for encounters and exchanges that opens up differentiated perspectives and invites the audience to engage with Israeli and Palestinian culture. In times of increasing polarization, we would like to encourage peaceful and democratic, but also critical, dialogues and make a contribution to intercultural coexistence in the city of peace Osnabrück.

Events February - April 2024

Exhibition: “Double Take / The Second Look - “Rehearsing the Spectacle of Specters”

The exhibition “Double Take / The Second Look” in the art space hase29 shows the video work “Rehearsing the Spectacle of Specters” (2014) by the two Israeli artists Nir Evron and Omer Krieger. The center of her work is Kibbutz Be'eri, a collective community founded in 1946 in southern Israel near the Gaza Strip. In this geopolitically explosive situation, Kibbutz Be'eri was one of the places hit hardest in the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

With their work, Nir Evron and Omer Krieger create a poetic image of the kibbutz - a unique collective social way of life that emerged as part of the Zionist movement. The video emphasizes the architecture of coexistence and collective coexistence. Today – around 10 years after it was created – the work offers viewers irretrievable insights into a community and a built environment that have been forever changed by the events of the last few months.

Film program in the art space hase29

17.02.2024/13.04.2024/29-XNUMX/XNUMX/XNUMX – art space haseXNUMX

“Once I Entered a Garden” (IL/FR/CH, 2012) by Avi Mograbi
selected by Nir Evron and Omer Krieger

It begins with a dream about an impossible encounter between Avi Mograbi and his grandfather Ibrahim outside their home in Damascus in 1920. What language did they speak? Avi only knows rudimentary Arabic, while Ibrahim hasn't even learned Hebrew. To make his dream come true, Avi turns to his Arabic teacher and good friend Ali Al-Azhari and suggests that they make a film together, “down to the last touches,” as Ali puts it. In typical Mograbi fashion, the filmmaker weaves a narrative about filmmaking into the film itself, a film about identity that questions our fundamental assumptions about what makes us who we are. (100 mins)

“The Great Book Heist” (IL/USA/UK, 2007-2012) by Benny Brunner
selected by the German-Palestinian Society

The film tells the little-known story of the destruction of Palestinian culture in 1948 and is based on the scientific research of Israeli doctoral student Gish Amit. Using interviews with eyewitnesses and historical images, Benny Brunner sheds light on the experience that had a decisive impact on the cultural identity of the Palestinian population. (57 mins)

Lecture: “Anti-Semitism in art and caricature – what are the problems?

by Dr. Andreas Mertin (theologian, art historian, curator)
Tuesday, February 12.03.2024th, 19, at 29 p.m. – Kunstraum haseXNUMX
in cooperation with the VHS Osnabrück

With documenta fifteen, for the first time in Germany, there was a public conversation about anti-Semitism and Israel-related anti-Semitism in the visual arts and in culture in general. The debate has intensified, especially since October 07, 2023. But what are “anti-Semitic images” and what traditions can they draw on? The cultural scientist Dr. Andreas Mertin had already analyzed some of the incriminated works at documenta fifteen in 2023 and examined them for their anti-Semitic content. Based on these analyses, he wants to address the history of anti-Semitism in Christian art, which still plays an important role in contemporary imagery. He will then present three exemplary works from Documenta fifteen with their problematic content and finally take a look at the caricatures that were created worldwide after October 07th, 2023. The question is always: How can you tell that an image is anti-Semitic?

Moderation: Dr. Hermann Queckenstedt (Director, Osnabrück Diocesan Museum)

Free entry!

Dr. Andreas Mertin (*1958) is theologian, art historian and exhibition curator. He gives the e-zine tà katoptrizómena. Wednesday, March 13.03.2024th, 18, at XNUMX p.m. – Osnabrück warehouse
in cooperation with the Osnabrück Film Festival

When director Rona creates a video workshop for Arab and Jewish women in a community center, a close bond between the women initially seems impossible. Their cultural and religious lives are too different. But with every self-made film that the women share with each other, they come closer to themselves and the others. Week after week, the course participants search for images of their unspoken wishes, dreams and thoughts as mothers, daughters, wives and women. An intimate look at nine lives with the courage to see yourself and others in a new light.

Film screening and discussion: “Redemption & Education"

Thursday, February 11.04.2024, 18, at 29 p.m. – Kunstraum haseXNUMX
in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Osnabrück and the Museumsquartier Osnabrück

It is relatively new that the cultural dimensions of anti-Semitism are also being debated in contemporary art. Anti-Semitism has always been part of the zeitgeist. Anti-Semitism has always been popularized through the language and images of art. The film “The Redemption Complex” (DE, 21:09 min) from the Forum for Democratic Culture and Contemporary Art is about this continuity.

After the film screening, the audience is invited to a conversation between the artists and the art and cultural scientist Nanne Buurman.

Free entry!

Further information about Nanne Buurman

Nanne Buurman is a research assistant for art theory at the University of Cologne. From 2018 to 2020, as a research assistant for documenta and exhibition studies at the Kassel School of Art, she was involved in setting up the documenta Institute and the transdisciplinary research center for exhibition studies (TRACES) at the University of Kassel and co-founded the web platform documenta studies. In 2019, Nanne Buurman led the project seminar “trained in freedom // being natural is simply a pose”, in which she and students from the Kassel Art University critically questioned the use of nature and naturalness by (new) right-wing movements and neoliberal sustainability marketing. The discussions with the political ambivalences of life-reforming purification movements of the last hundred years resulted in an exhibition in Kassel, which was held as a performative guest performance as part of the “Show and Try Again” anniversary program of the master's degree program in Curatorial Cultures in the gallery of the Leipzig University of Graphic Arts and Books was listed. From 2020 to 2022 she co-led the “dis_continuities” research group to research Nazi continuities at documenta. In this context, she founded the cross-university project “Right Continuities in Art Education and at Art Colleges” with colleagues from Leipzig in 2020 and curated the experimental arrangement “We are all ghosts: haunting infrastructures” at the Kassel Art Association in 2021. In 2022, as part of documenta fifteen, Nanne Buurman organized the project “g/hosting the past” at the invitation of the Ghetto Biennale Haiti, which was about dealing with invisibilized ethnic-national and colonial histories from exhibitions like documenta. Her contribution “angels of history: gothic gowns/formless forms” problematized, among other things, anti-Semitic continuities in German culture, especially in documenta (pre-)history.

This audience discussion will be moderated by Lydia Ziemke, who as a freelance director has worked intensively in Arabic-speaking countries and also in Israel and can therefore bring her special perspective to the current debate.
