Main topic: “An Incomplete Assembly”

Institutions aim to order fluid relationships such as power, labor, and privilege, but also language and emotions, as efficiently as possible and to establish this order permanently. What benefit do they offer, for whom, and at whose expense? And under what conditions are they prepared to change their once-instituted order? These questions also arise with regard to the role and responsibility of cultural institutions—and not only since massive attacks on artistic freedom have called into question the legitimacy of their existence and brought the inequalities and exclusions within the cultural scene into sharp focus. At the same time, it can be assumed that the codes of conduct, mission statements, and other written commitments with which more and more cultural institutions are presenting themselves to the public not only express increasing external pressure to clarify their own ethics and programs, but also an internal uncertainty within the institutions themselves. Is there an outside to institutionalization, or fundamentally other codes, agreements, and forms of assembly, and what might these look like for art and cultural work?
